Cuttlefish are in the class Cephalopoda which includes the squid and octopus. A cuttlefish a highly evolved pair of eyes. A cuttlefish has ten tentacles, two of which are extra-long. There is a narrow fin the length of the body on each side. It possesses a spongy internal shell. The larger cuttlefish (a foot or more in length) has wider lateral extensions of its tough outer mantle.
Cuttlefish are attracted to light at night and make cooperative subjects for the nocturnal underwater photographer (as in this photograph). Cuttlefish in the Pacific can be quite large, but they are very docile, content to slowly roam an area of reef…even in the midst of divers. Their eyes are quite luminous and expressive in appearance.

This photograph of this cuttlefish was taken at the New Georgia Island barrier reef, Solomon Islands, with a Canon F-1, 50mm macro lens and Kodachrome ISO 25 film.
